Reverberation/Echo (Sound Bounce) Reduction

There are a range of products that can reduce reverberation (sound bouncing) within a room. With reverberation the thing to remember is that sound will easily bounce from one surface to another. The harder the surface, the faster the bounce resulting in more echo and louder volume. The softer the surface the slower the bounce AND the more the sound gets muffled.

eg. Think of reverberated sound/echo like a tennis ball... if you drop in on concrete, you will clearly hear the sound of it hit the floor, it will bounce back almost to the height of your hand before dropping back down again and keep going until it eventually stops bouncing. If you drop it on a pillow, it is likely to make a quieter thud, maybe come up a little but more likely hit the pillow and not do much of anything. If you drop it on carpet, probably somewhere in between. Sound is similar.

Every room is different, so if you have timber floors, no window covering or timber blinds, leather lounge or desk and hard chair, you are likely to get a lot of echo (reverberation/sound bounce), so you may want something that will absorb more sound, or cover more of your wall to slow down the bounce. If you have carpet, curtains and fabric lounge with cushions, not so much.  A good starting point is get your foundations in place - floor, window coverings, furniture, sound source - then see how much you need to reduce and where the bounce is coming from to determine what you need.

The other variable is the pitch of the sound. The higher pitch the sound is the faster it bounces, the deeper the sound the slower. This may also influence the products you choose. The following products are options, and the tables with them can be used as a guide.

BASS TRAPS
Sound can be sneaky. Like a cheeky kid taking off with a bag of lollies to eat in the corner and then go crazy on a sugar high, sound can do the same. If it doesn't have enough softer surfaces to reduce the bounce before it reaches corners, once it gets there watch out! This is where bass traps come in, like a security guard for the corner to say "Hey! Settle down" and prevent the sound from bouncing back and forth on the angle between the two walls.
